PowerBoard is BEAB IEC 60335-1 certified

After a year of work, the PowerBoard heating system has received Intertek BEAB certification to IEC 60335-1:2012.

That is worth explaining rather than simply announcing, because “certified” is a word that gets used loosely in the heating market.

What IEC 60335-1 is

IEC 60335-1 is the international safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances. It is not a marketing scheme and not a self-declaration. It sets requirements for how a product is designed and constructed, and it prescribes the tests it has to survive: electrical strength, heating and temperature rise, abnormal operation, moisture resistance, mechanical strength, creepage and clearance distances, and the behaviour of the product when something goes wrong rather than when everything goes right.

BEAB is Intertek’s certification mark for products assessed against it. Certification is issued by the test house, not by us, and it is maintained through ongoing factory inspection rather than granted once and forgotten.

What it means in practice

The product was tested as a system, not as a component. A heating element can pass a materials test on its own and still fail as an installed appliance. IEC 60335-1 assesses the thing an electrician actually fits.

Abnormal operation is part of the test. A meaningful safety standard does not ask whether a product is safe when used correctly. It asks what happens when it is covered, over-volted, run continuously, or wired by someone in a hurry.

It is recognised where you are selling. IEC 60335-1 underpins the EN 60335-1 standard behind CE and UKCA marking, so the same evidence supports conformity across the European and UK markets.

It is independently maintained. Ongoing surveillance means the certificate reflects what is coming off the line now, not what was submitted for testing three years ago.
